What to Wear Horseback Riding in Phoenix: Ultimate Checklist at KOLI Equestrian Center

Preparing for a horseback ride through the Sonoran Desert requires thoughtful planning. Dressing appropriately not only ensures your comfort against the Sonoran sun and mesquite brush, but it is also essential for trail safety and horse control.

1. Footwear Guidelines

Footwear is one of the most critical safety elements on a trail ride. Your shoes keep your feet secure in the stirrups and protect against terrain hazards.

Required: Fully closed-toe shoes. Riding boots, leather work boots, or sturdy closed sneakers are acceptable.

Heel Limit: If wearing boots, heels must be 1 inch or lower. Higher heels can lock into stirrups during a dismount, posing a safety hazard.

Barefoot-Style Shoes: If wearing minimalist or barefoot shoes (such as Vibram FiveFingers or KSO EVO), they must be fully enclosed with a complete hard-rubber sole and contain no external buckles or straps.

Strictly Prohibited: Sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, open-toed shoes, and high-heeled boots.

2. Pants & Leg Protection

Direct contact with saddle leather can cause severe chafing during a ride, and low desert vegetation like cacti and mesquite branches can scratch bare legs.

Required: Long pants or full-length jeans.

Fit: Pants should fit comfortably without excessive loose fabric that could catch on tack.

Strictly Prohibited: Shorts above the knee are not permitted on the trail.

3. Tops, Outerwear & Layering

Desert temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. Layering properly helps maintain comfort while keeping trail safety in mind.

Shirt Selection: breathable short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts are ideal. A long-sleeved shirt offers added sun protection and guards against minor scrapes.

Shirt Pockets: Choose a shirt with a secure front pocket if you plan to carry your mobile phone.

Jackets & Sweaters: If you wear a jacket or outer layer, keep it worn normally. Jackets must not be tied around your waist, as loose sleeves can flap, catch on branches, or startle the horses.

4. Headwear & Helmet Policies

Protecting yourself from sun glare and head injuries is central to a safe riding experience.

Helmets: KOLI Equestrian Center strongly recommends protective helmet gear for all riders. Helmets are mandatory for all children participating in group riding events (such as birthday parties, school trips, or youth outings), regardless of waiver preferences. Adult riders opting not to wear a helmet must complete a formal helmet refusal waiver at check-in.

Sun Hats: Western hats or wide-brimmed caps are permitted provided they fit snugly and will not blow off in desert breezes.

5. Personal Items & Storage Rules

To protect both riders and horses from sudden distractions or dropped items, strict policies apply to gear taken on the trail:

Prohibited Items on Horseback: Bags, purses, backpacks, waist packs, and loose water bottles cannot be carried while riding.

Selfie Sticks: Strictly prohibited on the trail, as sudden extension or movement can spook horses.

Cell Phone Storage: Store mobile phones in a front shirt pocket or secure zip pocket. Storing phones in back pant pockets frequently leads to items sliding out onto the trail. (Note: Searching for lost items on trail paths incurs additional search charges.)

6. Pre-Ride Hydration & Heat Preparation

The dry heat of the Phoenix region can cause rapid dehydration even during cooler months.

Hydration Prep: Drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of your scheduled ride to maintain proper fluid balance.

Beverage Restrictions: Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages prior to riding. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the property and trail, and riders under the influence will be denied participation.
