What to Wear for Horseback Excursions?
There is nothing quite like exploring the stunning Arizona desert on horseback. As you prepare to ride through the scenic mesquite trees at KOLI Equestrian Center, making sure you have the right attire is the first step to a comfortable and memorable adventure.
Because safety and horse comfort are top priorities, KOLI has specific clothing guidelines all riders must follow. To help you pack and dress for your excursion, here is a quick guide on what to wear (and what to leave at home).
1. The Right Pants are Essential
When it comes to horseback riding, your leg wear makes a massive difference in your comfort.
- What to wear: Long pants or jeans are required.
- What to avoid: Do not wear shorts above the knee. Riding in shorts can cause uncomfortable chafing against the saddle and leaves your legs unprotected from desert brush.
2. Safe Footwear Only
Proper shoes keep your feet secure in the stirrups.
- What to wear: Fully closed-toe shoes are a must. If you wear riding boots, the heel must be no higher than 1 inch. If you prefer barefoot-style shoes (like Vibram FiveFingers), they are allowed only if they are fully enclosed, feature a complete hard rubber sole, and have no buckles or straps.
- Strictly prohibited: Flip-flops, sandals, Crocs, and high heels are not allowed on the trail.
3. Outerwear Guidelines
The desert weather can fluctuate, but how you wear your layers matters.
- What to do: If you bring a jacket, you must wear it.
- What to avoid: Do not tie jackets, sweaters, or long-sleeve shirts around your waist, as loose clothing can easily flap, startle the horses, or get caught on the saddle.
4. Protect Your Head
KOLI Equestrian Center strongly recommends that all riders wear a protective helmet to minimize the risk of injury. While adult riders can elect to sign a waiver to decline a helmet, helmets are strictly mandatory for all children participating in group events like birthday parties, school trips, or troop outings.
5. What Not to Bring on the Trail
To keep you focused on your horse and prevent the animals from being startled, certain personal items are restricted on the trail:
- No bags: Purses, backpacks, and loose water bottles are not allowed while riding.
- No selfie sticks: These are strictly banned on the trail as they can easily spook the horses.
- Keep your phone secure: If you want to bring your cell phone to snap photos during the leisurely parts of the ride, make sure your shirt has a front pocket to secure it. Keeping a phone in your back pocket puts it at a high risk of falling out. (Note: KOLI is not responsible for lost phones, and there is an extra fee if a wrangler has to take you back out to search the trail for a dropped device!)
A Quick Tip Before You Ride!
Don’t forget that the dry Arizona heat can be incredibly intense. Be sure to drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of your ride so you stay fully hydrated and feel your best out on the beautiful desert trails.
Enjoy your ride!
