Can You Take a 3-Year-Old Horseback Riding? What Parents Need to Know

The short answer is yes, but with major caveats. While 3-year-olds can interact with horses in specific, highly controlled settings, they aren’t quite ready for standard trail rides.

Few things match the magic of introducing your little one to horses for the first time. If you have an adventurous toddler, you might be wondering: Can you actually take a 3-year-old horseback riding?

Here is a breakdown of what is safe for a toddler, what to look for, and how you can still enjoy an equestrian adventure as a family.

The Reality of Riding for Toddlers

When it comes to traditional horseback riding, age 3 is generally too young for a standard trail ride. At this stage, a toddler’s balance, core strength, and motor skills are still developing. More importantly, their attention spans are short, and they lack the physical strength to control an animal that weighs over 1,000 pounds.

For these reasons, most commercial stables have strict age minimums for trail rides—typically ranging from 6 to 8 years old.

We never recommend double riding (parent and toddler on same horse) as if a situation arises on the horse, two people can be injuried.

What is safe for a 3-year-old?

  • Hand-led pony rides: A parent or guide walks right next to the pony, holding the lead rope, while the child is securely supported.
  • Ground introduction: Grooming a gentle pony, feeding treats, and learning how to stand safely around livestock.
  • Horse-drawn activities: Carriage, sleigh, or wagon rides that let kids experience the equestrian atmosphere without being in the saddle.

Visiting KOLI Equestrian Center with Young Kids

If you are planning a family trip to KOLI Equestrian Center, it helps to know our guidelines ahead of time so you can plan the perfect day.

Our Riding Age Limit: To ensure the safety of our guests and our horses, the minimum age limit for independent horseback riding at KOLI Equestrian Center is 7 years old.

We know this can be disappointing for your enthusiastic 3-year-olds, but we prioritize safety above all else. Because our trail rides head out into the beautiful, open desert landscape, riders need to be old enough to confidently sit their horse and follow guide instructions.

The Perfect Alternative: Hay Wagon Rides!

Just because your toddler can’t hop into a saddle doesn’t mean they have to miss out on the fun. KOLI Equestrian Center offers hay wagon options for all ages.

Our wagon rides are a fantastic, stress-free way for families with toddlers, infants, and grandparents to experience the beautiful scenery together. Your 3-year-old gets to see our beautiful horses at work, feel the bump of the trail, and enjoy the outdoors, all while safely seated right next to you.

Tips for Bringing a 3-Year-Old to the Stables

If you’re introducing your toddler to a horse environment for the first time, keep these quick tips in mind:

  • Dress for the ranch: Put your child in closed-toed shoes (sneakers or boots) and long pants to protect their legs from scratchy brush or hay.
  • Set expectations: Explain beforehand that horses are big and can be loud, so they need to use “inside voices” around them.
  • Watch their energy: Stables can be overwhelming. Keep visits short, sweet, and focused on fun.
